My Scraps & More Sketch #100

Wow, 100 sketches!! If it wasn't for you, our followers, we would of never made it to this many sketches. So thank you all so much for your continued participation and support! For our awesome milestone we have a sketch from the very talented Laura Whitaker. Before we get to her sketch let's get to know her a little better...

I am a stay at home mom, with 3 boys and a puppy. My husband and I have been married for 27 years and we live in Hamilton, Ontario. I began scrapbooking about 12 or 13 years ago, mostly to create Lifebooks for our foster children at the time. A couple of years after that I began creating albums for our family too, and that is when I truly immersed myself in the hobby. Aside from scrapbooking I like to crochet, dabble in home decor and spend the summers at our trailer up north where we swim, boat, have camp fires and hang out with friends (and craft well I do, while my husband fishes after dinner and my youngest plays with his friends). I don’t have a set time of the day to craft, I just create whenever I can. i also enjoy creating class and kits for the store that I design for.

I belong to a few design teams; an online store (ScrapMuch?), a kit club (Boys Rule) and a small Canadian manufacturer (Evalicious), and run a sketch challenge site (Stuck?!), as well. I love to try out new techniques and consider my style mostly clean with a love for layers. I have a passion for patterned paper and fun dimensional embellishments.

Usually when I create a sketch, I sit and try to create a few at a time. Most often I start with an idea of how many photos that I want to include and play around with my go to shapes until it feels done. Sometimes I will create a sketch based on a layout that I have recently created.

My favourite products and techniques are patterned paper (many patterns on a page, I do not use a lot of cardstock), water colour paints, masks, Mr. Huey’s mist, buttons (I rarely do a page without buttons) and smaller scale photos because I really like ‘'”white space”.

My Scraps & More Sketch #98

Hello again! It's time for our second sketch of the month. Today's sketch is brought to us by our Guest Sketch Designer, Heather Leopard. But before we get to Heather's super fun sketch, lets learn a little about her 1st......

1) Heather has enjoyed capturing and documenting memories as far back as she can remember but it was the birth of her children and her desire to capture candid photos & stories for her children that reignited her passion for scrapbooking. Heather designs for American Crafts and Gossamer Blue kit club and manages social media for Scrapbook Circle kit club. Heather leads marketing initiatives for a major computer company and lives in Cypress, Texas with her husband, two daughters and her bonus son.

2) Tell us about your scrappy style/habits: I consider my style to be a Layered Chic, mixing, matching and layering multiple patterns and colors in fun and unique ways. I usually scrap a couple of times a week after the kids are kissed goodnight and tucked in bed and while the hubby is watching one of his "guy" shows. I usually have the TV playing in the background to keep me company.

3) Describe your sketch making process: When I’m creating a sketch, I like to look at the products first to see what I want to play with. Each collection is unique and there’s usually a paper or embellishment that is begging to be used – from doilies to 3x4 cards or in today’s case, fun patterns and flair. I also determine what picture or pictures I want to include so I know how much space to allocate to them. Afterall, that’s the reason for the layout.

4) 5 products/trends or techniques that are your favorite right now? These change all the time for me but I guess that’s why they call them trends. Right now, I’m particularly fond of using metallics, especially gold. Other techniques I love to use are layers upon layers of paper and ephemera, supersized die cut shapes with paper pieced backgrounds, adding a splash of color using watercolors or mist drops, and last but not least, combining pattern papers to create fun backgrounds.
